Facebook & Farmville Dominate Mobile Broadband Data Usage

Farmville 3 Mobile Broadband Usage
UK mobile network 3 have today released the first in a series of research papers that detail the internet traffic behaviours and use among their mobile broadband customers.
It probably comes as no surprise to learn that a huge chunk of mobile broadband usage is social-networking based.
The figures for usage in July 2010, show that of 2,500 terabytes of data which flowed across the 3 network, social networking giant, Facebook, accounted for the largest chunk hitting 7 terabytes of traffic.
Following Facebook is Zynga, the makers of Farmville, followed by Apple (including iTunes), YouTube, Google, and Farmville itself.

In decreasing order:
- Facebook 7023 gigabytes of data
- Zynga 3584
- Apple 2491
- Google 1717
- Farmville 1680
- MSN 947
- Hotmail 708
- YouTube 678
- Microsoft 657
- Bebo 304
3 collated the data from more than 1 million customers, which is taken specifically from mobile broadband and dongle users. 3 claims that their user base currently accounts for some 40% of the dongle market in the UK.
Commenting on the findings, Charlotte Blanchard, 3′s director of internet products and services believes that the research demonstrates the huge growth in social gaming, and that the gaming demographic has grown from one mostly dominated by young males, to a gaming community that now includes a far wider cross-section of society.
“With gaming on Zynga and Facebook the profile is very different, and much more female and over 35s,” she said. “That social element drives the frequency of use, and I do think people will be surprised how quickly this social gaming space is starting to kick off.”
